Marvel’s Thunderbolts rebranded as The New Avengers

Marvel Studios has officially retitled its latest blockbuster, Thunderbolts, as The New Avengers, a daring marketing pivot announced on May 6, 2025, just days after the film’s May 1 theatrical debut.

The move—revealed through social media and a video of stars like Florence Pugh and Sebastian Stan peeling off Thunderbolts posters to unveil The New Avengers—has sparked buzz among fans and critics alike. This rebrand signals a thrilling new chapter for Marvel’s cinematic universe.

The asterisk in Thunderbolts hinted at a twist, and the film’s third act delivers:

CIA director Valentina Allegra de Fontaine (Julia Louis-Dreyfus) rebrands the antihero team—Yelena Belova (Pugh), Bucky Barnes (Stan), Red Guardian (David Harbour), John Walker (Wyatt Russell), Ghost (Hannah John-Kamen), and Sentry (Lewis Pullman)—as The New Avengers in a slick PR move.

Director Jake Schreier told The New York Times that this was planned from the first script draft, with the asterisk as a deliberate clue. A post-credits scene teases tensions with Sam Wilson’s Captain America, who’s trademarking “The Avengers,” setting up a clash in 2026’s Avengers: Doomsday.

The film grossed $76 million domestically and $162 million globally in its opening weekend—a solid but not stellar haul compared to past Avengers films.

Marvel’s aggressive rebrand, including updated billboards and Fandango listings, aims to leverage the Avengers’ iconic brand, though some fans on X criticized it as a desperate spoiler, with @mattimusprimal noting it might be a bid to boost box office numbers after a Monday dip.

Others, like @tomkvideo, praised the narrative fit, tying it to the film’s plot where the rebrand is a strategic pivot by de Fontaine.

Disney clarified to Deadline that the official title remains Thunderbolts, with the campaign highlighting the asterisk’s meaning rather than a full rename. Still, the move has divided audiences:

The Hollywood Reporter called it a fresh take on MCU camaraderie, while Cosmic Book News slammed it as a sign of Marvel’s lack of faith in the original title.

For fans, the rebrand sets up exciting stakes for Avengers: Doomsday, where the New Avengers will face Robert Downey Jr.’s mega-villain alongside the Fantastic Four.
