The Akbayan called on the Department of Foreign Affairs, Republic of the Philippines to temporarily suspend the 14 day visa free entry granted to Chinese nationals, citing what it described as repeated attacks by the Chinese Embassy on Filipino public officials and interference in Philippine internal affairs.
Akbayan said the move would be a strong but measured response to the embassy’s recent statements, which it accused of spreading disinformation and undermining Philippine sovereignty, particularly in relation to the West Philippine Sea.
“Why are we rewarding a rude foreign entity that openly attacks our officials and peddles fake news about our beloved West Philippine Sea with visa free holidays?” asked Akbayan president Rafaela David.
The call comes amid escalating public exchanges between the Chinese Embassy and Philippine officials. On Monday, 15 senators from across party lines signed a resolution condemning what they described as hostile statements from the embassy.
David said the proposal is rooted in accountability and respect between states, stressing that the criticism is directed at official conduct and not at ordinary citizens.
“Filipinos have always distinguished between peoples and governments. Our issue is not with the Chinese people, but with an oppressive regime and an embassy that behaves as if it is above basic diplomatic norms,” David said.
She added that Akbayan stands in solidarity with Chinese citizens who also experience repression under authoritarian rule.
“We stand in solidarity with ordinary Chinese citizens who, like Filipinos, are also familiar with the oppression of authoritarian regimes. This call is directed at their government, particularly the Chinese Embassy’s despicable conduct here in Manila,” David said.
David warned that continued harassment should carry consequences, saying the Philippines must assert its position as a sovereign state.
“China must understand that harassment will be met with consequences, and that the Philippines is serious about defending its sovereignty,” she said.
The 14 day visa free entry for Chinese nationals took effect on January 16, 2026, following the DFA’s announcement earlier this month.
