The Philippines has secured its first Women’s Tennis Association 125 tournament, marking a major entry into the global tennis circuit. The Philippine Women’s Open will run from January 26 to 31, 2026 at the Rizal Memorial Tennis Center in Manila, a venue set for upgrades ahead of the event.
“What once was just a dream is coming true. It’s happening. The first WTA event to be held in the Philippines, and it’s all thanks to the efforts of the Philippine tennis leaders, and I’m so grateful. As a player, I could not be more proud to say that Pilipinas now has a whole tennis tournament,” Alex Eala said in a video message during the launch.
Her participation remains uncertain. Eala already holds a guaranteed main draw slot at the 2026 Australian Open after climbing to a career-best world No. 50. The Grand Slam runs from January 12 to February 1. A deep run in Melbourne would keep her from returning in time for the Manila tournament.
Philippine Tennis Association secretary-general John Rey Tiangco said the event marks a breakthrough. “This is historic, this is the first time we’re hosting this WTA, a women’s professional tournament. It’s a great opportunity for the Filipinos to watch live top women professional players,” he said.
Tiangco added that the tournament will expose local athletes to elite competition and could influence the country’s rising players. “We can learn from them, and of course our young tennis players can be inspired by watching. And there’s also a chance that our top players, including Alex Eala could play this event. Tennis is actually a great sport for the country. We have proven, Alex has proven, that we can excel in tennis,” he said.
Eala is also set to serve as one of the Philippine flag bearers for the 2025 Southeast Asian Games scheduled from December 9 to 20.
