Senator Bam Aquino has sponsored a significant bill aimed at modernizing the Philippine education system. The proposed legislation seeks to end the mandatory use of the “spiral progression” method in schools, allowing the Department of Education (DepEd) greater flexibility in how teaching methods are applied.

The spiral progression system, which requires students to revisit the same subjects with increasing difficulty over multiple years, has been a standard part of the curriculum. However, many educators have raised concerns that this approach doesn’t work for all subjects or learning styles. Aquino’s sponsorship of the bill brings much-needed change, allowing teachers the freedom to use more adaptable and effective methods suited to their students’ needs.

Aquino, who has long advocated for reforms in education, emphasized that “education must adapt to the times.” He believes that providing teachers with the flexibility to choose teaching strategies based on their students’ learning styles will lead to better outcomes.

By removing the rigid structure of the spiral progression system, this bill empowers educators to craft personalized, student-centered learning experiences. It’s a step toward a more progressive education system where teachers can innovate and make a real difference in students’ lives.

Aquino’s sponsorship of the bill is a positive move towards a more responsive and dynamic education system. It reflects his commitment to improving the quality of education and ensuring that Filipino students are equipped with the tools they need to succeed in an ever-evolving world.
