Scarlett Johansson is set to join The Batman Part II, according to multiple industry reports describing her as moving toward a major but undisclosed role in the next chapter of DC’s Gotham.
The development positions her alongside Robert Pattinson in the sequel to the 2022 hit film, marking one of the most notable shifts from Marvel to DC in recent years. Warner Bros has not announced her role or issued an official statement on the casting.
The sequel continues under DC’s Elseworlds banner, operating outside the main continuity overseen by James Gunn and Peter Safran. Matt Reeves’ first Batman film earned about $772 million worldwide and reintroduced Gotham through a grounded, noir-driven lens. Pattinson is set to return as the Dark Knight in the follow-up.
Reeves confirmed earlier that the screenplay, co-written with Mattson Tomlin, underwent strict security during development. “It’s been a long journey, but I am so incredibly excited. I’m really proud of the script me and Mattson did,” he said, noting that the physical script was stored in a locked pouch with controlled access as they refined the story.
Production for The Batman Part II is expected to push forward in 2026, with a potential theatrical release either late that year or in 2027 depending on Warner Bros’ scheduling decisions. The studio has not finalized or announced a specific release date.
Johansson’s move signals a major career turn after more than a decade portraying Natasha Romanoff in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Her last appearance as Black Widow preceded a shift toward producing and a broader range of film roles, making her entry into DC’s Gotham one of the most closely watched casting developments in the franchise.
DC Studios and Warner Bros have not disclosed her character or narrative involvement. Further casting details are expected as the project advances.
