Speculation is growing that Cillian Murphy could be cast as Lord Voldemort in HBO’s upcoming Harry Potter television series, as questions continue to surround the yet-to-be-announced actor for one of the franchise’s most iconic roles.
The discussion gained traction after remarks made by Ralph Fiennes, who portrayed Voldemort in five Harry Potter films. During a red carpet appearance for his film Conclave, Fiennes was asked who might take over the role in the television adaptation. He suggested that the casting may already be settled and pointed to Murphy as a strong choice, implying that a decision could already be in place.
The role of Voldemort remains one of the few major parts not yet confirmed by HBO, which announced the Harry Potter reboot in 2023 as a multi-season adaptation closely following J.K. Rowling’s original novels. The network has confirmed the actors playing Harry Potter, Hermione Granger, and Ron Weasley, but has not disclosed who will portray the Dark Lord.
Fiennes had earlier expressed support for Murphy as a potential successor during a 2024 appearance on Watch What Happens Live, describing him as a “fantastic actor” and saying he would welcome the casting. His later remarks appeared to go further by suggesting the decision may already have been made.
Murphy has previously addressed the speculation himself. In a September interview on the Happy Sad Confused podcast, he said he was unaware of any casting plans and spoke highly of Fiennes’ performance, calling him an acting legend and noting the challenge of following his portrayal.
The Harry Potter television series is expected to premiere in 2027. HBO and Murphy’s representatives have not confirmed any casting decision for Voldemort, leaving the role officially unfilled despite growing speculation.
The upcoming Harry Potter reboot also unfolds amid J.K. Rowling’s continuing public disputes with key actors from the original film franchise. Rowling has remained outspoken on sex and gender issues since publishing a 2020 essay that prompted Daniel Radcliffe, Emma Watson, and Rupert Grint to issue statements supporting transgender rights, effectively severing ties between the author and the trio.
Since then, Rowling has used social media to criticize what she describes as cultural and political movements she believes undermine women’s rights, and has indicated she is unlikely to reconcile with Radcliffe or Watson. The tensions have remained part of the broader backdrop surrounding the franchise as it transitions to a new cast and long-form television adaptation.
