Former Justice Secretary and party-list Representative Leila de Lima clarified her stance on proposed legislative changes, emphasizing that she will oppose efforts to extend term limits, remove restrictions on political dynasties, or weaken provisions on human rights and social justice.
De Lima described the issues as matters of “transcendental importance” and voiced openness to discussions aimed at clarifying provisions on impeachment and making certain economic provisions self-executing. She stressed, however, that any move to extend the terms of incumbents or dilute protections for citizens would face her firm opposition.
De Lima highlighted that her position reflects a commitment to constitutional integrity and safeguards against political overreach, underscoring her continued vigilance over legislation affecting governance and civil liberties.
Her comments come amid discussions in Congress about amendments to the Constitution and certain economic provisions. De Lima also clarified that tweaks to public officials’ term limits remain off-limits for her.
De Lima’s intervention signals a clear line against changes that could benefit sitting politicians at the expense of institutional checks, civil rights, and social protections, maintaining her focus on governance reform over political maneuvering.
