The DepEd is strengthening cooperation with ASEAN partners as it looks to expand the use of artificial intelligence in Philippine basic education, positioning digital tools as part of its broader effort to modernize classrooms. Education officials, policymakers, and regional partners met in Pasig City during the 3rd Regional Policy Convening of the AI Ready ASEAN Programme, where discussions focused on how AI can be integrated into school systems in practical and responsible ways.
DepEd highlighted Project AGAP(dot)AI as its main framework for introducing AI concepts to teachers and learners. The department said a large number of Filipino educators and students have already participated in AI-related training under the ASEAN-backed program. Officials described the initiative as a way to build foundational skills and prepare schools for wider digital adoption, while maintaining the central role of teachers in the learning process.
According to DepEd, AI-enabled tools are being explored for their potential to support instruction by helping schools monitor learning progress, identify gaps, and manage administrative tasks more efficiently. Officials said these systems are intended to assist teachers, not replace them, and to allow more time for direct teaching and student engagement. ASEAN partners are working with the department to align training efforts and policy approaches as part of a regional push for digital readiness in education.
Discussions during the convening also emphasized responsible and inclusive use of technology. DepEd officials said safeguards are necessary to ensure AI tools are appropriate for learners, used ethically, and do not widen existing gaps in access, particularly in blended and online learning environments.
For learners, DepEd said the partnerships aim to improve access to digital learning resources supported by data and regional collaboration. For teachers, the department stressed continued training and institutional support as schools adapt to new technologies. DepEd said ongoing engagement with ASEAN partners remains central to its efforts to integrate AI into education while keeping instruction grounded, inclusive, and teacher-led.
