Senator JV Ejercito has called for expanded work-from-home arrangements, improved public transport, and bike-to-work programs as the country prepares for the possible impact of rising global oil prices.
In a Facebook post, Ejercito said hybrid or remote work setups should be expanded in sectors where physical presence is not always necessary. He cited industries such as information technology, business process outsourcing, finance, and government administrative offices as examples where flexible work arrangements can reduce daily commuting and fuel consumption.
The senator said the experience during the COVID-19 pandemic showed that many sectors can continue operating productively even under flexible work setups. According to him, strengthening the country’s telecommuting framework could help reduce traffic congestion while also easing pressure on fuel demand.
Ejercito added that promoting alternative commuting options such as cycling and improving public transportation should also be part of the government’s response to potential fuel price increases.
He noted that global energy developments are beyond the control of the Philippine government but emphasized the need for preparedness.
“Hindi natin kontrolado ang geopolitics, pero maaari tayong maging handa,” Ejercito said, adding that the government should have a clear plan to protect the livelihood and welfare of Filipinos during periods of economic uncertainty.
