In the high-stakes world of professional sports, where every second counts and bodies are pushed to their limits, Erwin B. Valencia carved a unique path—one that blended cutting-edge sports science with holistic healing.
His journey from New Jersey to Davao and eventually to Madison Square Garden isn’t just a success story; it’s a testament to vision, perseverance, and the power of believing in the unseen.
The Filipino Who Broke Barriers in U.S. Sports
Valencia’s professional career took off in Major League Baseball (MLB), where he spent eight years as the Pittsburgh Pirates’ rehabilitation director, focusing on athlete recovery and performance enhancement.
In 2014, he joined the New York Knicks, fulfilling a dream he had envisioned since he was 18 years old. “Working for the Knicks was the biggest blessing of my life,” Valencia shared in an interview.
“It was a vision I had when I was 18—I was so clear of what I wanted, and it came true” (Valencia, 2024, as cited in Tagala, 2024).
He started as an assistant athletics trainer and physical therapist, eventually leading the Knicks’ medical team as director of training and conditioning.
More Than Just Recovery—A Philosophy of Wellness
Unlike traditional trainers who focus solely on strength and rehabilitation, Valencia saw an opportunity to elevate performance through mindfulness.
Drawing from his experiences with meditation, Eastern healing techniques, and sports science, he implemented the first-ever mindfulness program in NBA history—a move that would later earn recognition from The Washington Post.
His philosophy was simple: healing isn’t just physical, it’s mental and emotional, too. By incorporating meditation into the team’s daily regimen, he helped athletes recover faster, improve focus, and perform at their peak both on and off the court.
The Road to the NBA Wasn’t Easy

Valencia’s love for sports led him to pursue a degree in Physical Therapy at the University of the Philippines, but breaking into the international sports scene took more than just a diploma—it required relentless perseverance, risk-taking, and a deep trust in his vision.
Before landing in the NBA, he spent years working in MLB, Cirque du Soleil, and top sports organizations worldwide, honing his craft and expanding his approach beyond conventional methods.
His relentless drive even led him to work alongside Phil Jackson, the legendary coach whose Zen-inspired leadership mirrored Valencia’s own approach to holistic athlete care.
Beyond Sports: Building a Legacy of Wellness and Gratitude
For Erwin Valencia, making an impact has always gone beyond just keeping athletes in top shape. His goal was never just about sports—it was about empowering people through wellness, mental health, and mentorship. That mission led him to build initiatives that continue to change lives today.
In 2013, he founded KINETIQ, a company that transformed sports medicine events by integrating personal growth and development into their programs.
A year later, he launched #BeyondMedyo, a mental health movement in the Philippines that encouraged open conversations about emotional well-being while challenging outdated ideas of career success.
Then, in 2018, he established the Grasshopper Project, a mentorship program for health, wellness, and performance professionals, giving them the guidance and tools to become future leaders in their fields.
But one of his most impactful endeavors is his latest initiative—Gratitude Gang.

What started as casual gratitude sessions on the social-audio app Clubhouse quickly turned into a community of changemakers, all united by a shared passion for positivity and well-being.
Inspired by the collective energy, the Gratitude Gang took their mission to the next level—launching NFTs to raise funds for rebuilding schools in disaster-hit communities in the Philippines.
Today, Gratitude Gang has evolved into a movement dedicated to uplifting children’s mental health, providing support through youth-driven programs and partnerships with local nonprofits.
Their goal is simple but powerful: to nurture resilience and joy in young minds, ensuring that every child has the opportunity to grow, thrive, and shine brighter.
“We’re on a mission to transform every child’s mental health journey into a healthy, joy-filled adventure,” Erwin shares. “And we’re just getting started.”
A New Chapter Beyond the Game
After nine seasons with the Knicks, Valencia made the bittersweet decision to step away from the NBA before the 2023-2024 season, announcing his departure through a heartfelt letter.
But for someone whose impact transcends sports, leaving the league isn’t the end—it’s just another pivot.
Now, he’s shifting gears to high-performance life coaching, a mission aimed at helping those who help others.
Whether it’s athletes, executives, or everyday individuals, Valencia continues to advocate for a balanced, mindful, and holistic approach to success—one that values well-being just as much as achievement.
Legacy of a Game-Changer
Valencia’s story is proof that success isn’t just about talent or luck—it’s about vision, persistence, and embracing the unconventional.
While he may no longer be courtside, his influence on sports medicine, mindfulness, and Filipino representation in global sports will continue to inspire generations.
And who knows? The universe has a way of bringing him exactly where he’s meant to be.
