FIFA awarded President Donald Trump the inaugural FIFA Peace Prize on December 5, 2025, during the 2026 World Cup draw in Washington.
The presentation, led by FIFA president Gianni Infantino, immediately shifted the tone of the ceremony and drew global attention to the organization’s newest and most politically charged award.
The prize was created this year and introduced ahead of the draw, a move that surprised many inside world football. Infantino praised Trump’s involvement in international negotiations, including efforts surrounding a Gaza ceasefire.
He placed a medal around Trump’s neck and handed him a certificate recognizing his role in what FIFA described as promoting peace. Infantino also presented a trophy featuring hands lifting a globe.
Trump called the honor “one of the great honors of my life.” He thanked his family and emphasized cooperation between the United States, Canada and Mexico, the cohosts of the 2026 World Cup. Trump said the three countries have worked effectively in preparation for the tournament.
Infantino’s close relationship with Trump dates back years. He has visited the White House multiple times, attended Trump’s inauguration and spoken publicly about Trump’s influence on major geopolitical issues.
The Guardian reported last month that senior figures inside FIFA were unaware the peace prize existed until Infantino announced it publicly.
The award was presented during a week in which the administration was active in international negotiations, including diplomatic efforts involving Ukraine.
The ceremony unfolded between match-draw segments at one of the most watched events on the global football calendar, as teams learned their placements for the expanded 48-team World Cup.
