Manila City Mayor Isko Moreno acknowledged the inclusion of Sta. Ana Hospital in the World’s Best Hospitals 2026 Philippines list, where the city-run facility placed 25th out of 35 hospitals nationwide. The ranking was released by Newsweek in partnership with Statista.
Sta. Ana Hospital operates under the Manila City Health Cluster led by OIC-City Health Officer Dr. Grace Padilla and is currently headed by Dr. Janet Tan. In recent years, the hospital expanded facilities and services, particularly during the COVID-19 response.
Within its complex, the Manila Molecular Testing Laboratory was established to increase local diagnostic capacity. The RT-PCR laboratory runs two Sansure machines capable of processing up to 1,000 swab tests per day per machine. It also operates an Xpert Xpress SARS-CoV-2 cartridge-based rapid molecular testing system. The hospital became the only LGU-run district hospital in the country equipped with two types of molecular laboratories.
A vaccine storage facility was also set up to maintain cold-chain standards during the citywide vaccination rollout. The facility houses Haier HYC-390 refrigeration units for AstraZeneca and Sinovac vaccines, biomedical freezers for Janssen and Moderna doses, and -86°C ultra-low temperature freezers for Pfizer vaccines. Transport coolers were used to distribute supplies to vaccination sites.
Further upgrades included a Physical Therapy and Rehabilitation Medicine and Robotics Center equipped with Hybrid Assistive Limb units designed to assist patients with neurological and musculoskeletal conditions. A dialysis center was also established with 11 seats, six Fresenius hemodialysis machines, additional HD units, portable reverse osmosis systems, HEPA filtration, a negative pressure room, and emergency equipment such as ECG and defibrillator units.
According to Newsweek, the 2026 rankings assessed more than 2,500 hospitals across 32 countries using medical expert recommendations, hospital quality metrics, patient experience data, and Patient-Reported Outcome Measures.
