WWE Icon John Cena has officially announced his retirement from professional wrestling, closing the curtain on one of the most influential careers in the sport’s history.
Cena’s final match took place at Saturday Night’s Main Event, where he faced Gunther in a high-profile bout that marked his last appearance inside the ring. The match signaled the end of a defining era, as Cena stepped away after more than two decades of competition.
In explaining his decision, Cena pointed to the physical toll of wrestling. He said years of constant wear and injury had pushed his body to its limits, describing it as “screaming” for him to move on. Throughout his career, he underwent multiple surgeries, including procedures on his neck, pectorals, and triceps, leading him to say it was time to “close the chapter.”
Since debuting in 2002, Cena evolved from a brash newcomer during the “ruthless aggression” era into one of the most recognizable figures in professional wrestling. His career included his run as the “Doctor of Thuganomics” and later his role as the face of the industry, defined by the “You Can’t See Me” catchphrase and the “Never Give Up” mantra. He finished his in-ring career as a 17-time world champion.
Cena transitioned from wrestling to Hollywood acting, building a successful career in film and television. Beyond entertainment, he also holds the Guinness World Record for the most wishes granted, having fulfilled more than 650 wishes through the Make-A-Wish Foundation. His partnership with the organization began in 2002. Make-A-Wish is a non-profit group that helps grant wishes to children diagnosed with critical illnesses.
Cena’s retirement marks the end of a career defined not only by championships, but by longevity, mainstream influence, and a lasting impact both inside and outside the ring.
