Kira Ellis, a young Filipina triathlete, shocked the field at the 2025 Europe Triathlon Junior Cup in Riga, Latvia, by seizing the gold medal in her comeback race. She completed the sprint triathlon—comprising a 750-meter swim, a 22-kilometer bike, and a 5.1-kilometer run—in 1:05:07, narrowly beating Belgium’s Luca Vanderbruggen by just 10 seconds, with Germany’s Sarah Walter taking third.
Her split times told the story of dominance: 12:09 in the swim, 34:27 on the bike, and 17:36 on the run. The victory came after months of uncertainty following a brutal recovery from shin splints that sidelined her for half a year. Once written off, Ellis returned sharper than ever, proving her endurance and mental toughness on the European stage.
As the only Filipina and Asian athlete in the women’s junior division, Ellis raced without a teammate but carried the country’s flag with grit. Reuniting with her coaches and overcoming self-doubt, she transformed what was meant to be a test of readiness into a statement win.
Before her Riga triumph, Ellis had already made her mark as a SEA Games gold medalist in the mixed aquathlon relay and as the 2024 Asia Triathlon Junior Cup champion in Malaysia. Now a freshman at Queens University of Charlotte in the United States, she’s setting her sights on the 2025 SEA Games in Thailand and future Olympic contention.
