President Bongbong Marcos said the Philippines is taking steps to strengthen its tourism sector, as he highlighted the need for better infrastructure during an event in Lapu-Lapu City, Cebu on March 16. Speaking at the inauguration of the Mactan Expo, Marcos pointed to ongoing efforts to improve the country’s capacity to host more visitors and major international events.
“Our tourism industry is now under a great deal of pressure dahil sa mga nangyayari. And last year, we only welcomed six million people. Just to give you a frame of reference, Thailand welcomes 30 million tourists every year,” Marcos said. “Kaya malaki ang hahabulin natin.”
Marcos said infrastructure upgrades are central to the government’s strategy, with projects like the Mactan Expo designed to support large-scale gatherings such as the ASEAN Summit. He stressed that improving accessibility and facilities will help make destinations more competitive and appealing to international travelers. “Our infrastructure must continue to improve so that every visitor’s experience becomes smoother and more memorable,” he said.
The President said expanding tourism capacity across key areas such as Cebu, Davao, and Cagayan de Oro remains part of the plan, noting that more locations are being prepared to host global events and attract visitors. He also acknowledged that some areas still need additional facilities, which the government aims to address through continued development.
For Filipinos, stronger tourism translates to more jobs and business opportunities across transport, hospitality, and local enterprises. Marcos said improving infrastructure and visitor experience will help increase arrivals and drive economic activity, positioning tourism as a key contributor to growth.
