Meta replaces human moderators with AI to monitor and regulate content

One of the internet’s most human-heavy roles is now being replaced by AI. Meta is rolling out advanced artificial intelligence systems to handle large parts of content moderation across its platforms.

The shift reduces reliance on third-party vendors that have long reviewed posts, images, and accounts at scale. At the same time, the company says human reviewers will remain involved in critical and high-risk decisions.

The new systems are designed to detect harmful and illegal content more efficiently. This includes scams, fraud, child exploitation, drug-related activity, and terrorism-linked material.

Meta said early tests show these tools can detect significantly more violating content while lowering error rates. The systems can also identify impersonation accounts and flag suspicious behavior such as unusual logins or sudden profile changes.

Meanwhile, the transition targets areas where manual review struggles to keep up. Repetitive tasks and fast-changing threats, such as scams and illicit sales, will shift toward automation.

Meta said its AI can identify and mitigate around 5,000 scam attempts per day by analyzing patterns in real time. This allows faster response compared to traditional human-led review processes.

At the same time, human oversight will remain part of the system. Reviewers will continue to handle appeals, account disablement decisions, and cases involving law enforcement. Experts will also design, train, and evaluate these AI systems to ensure accuracy and maintain control over complex decisions.

The rollout will take place over several years and expand once the systems consistently outperform current moderation methods. Meta is also introducing an AI support assistant across Facebook and Instagram to handle account-related issues, extending its use of AI beyond moderation into user support.
