Concerned Women for America released a new report claiming that more than 41 percent of children’s shows on Netflix contain LGBTQ content. The group said its analysis covered G-rated, TV-Y, TV-G, and TV-Y7 programming on the platform and asserted that Netflix is “an active driver” of LGBTQ themes in children’s media.
CWA said 33 percent of all children’s shows across age categories featured LGBTQ characters, themes, storylines, or messaging. The group said 41 percent of G-rated series and 41 percent of TV-Y7 shows contained LGBTQ content. It said TV-Y programming carried the lowest share, but 21 percent of titles under that category still included LGBTQ elements.
The report cited examples from several Netflix children’s titles. CWA pointed to a reboot of The Magic School Bus that introduces Liz, described as a “trans-coded” chameleon, and Mrs. Franklin, characterized as Angela’s wife. It also flagged Strawberry Shortcake: Berry in the Big City, which introduces Banoffee, described as a transgender character, and Raisin Cane, described as “nonbinary.” The report said newer reboots of Power Rangers, The Baby-Sitters Club, She-Ra, and The Fairly OddParents added LGBTQ characters where none existed in earlier versions.
CWA CEO Penny Nance said “Netflix’s anti-child, anti-family agenda has finally been exposed” and claimed children’s programming “has been infiltrated by adult preoccupations with sexual preferences and gender identity.” She said “These are shocking numbers and most parents are unaware.”
The report also referenced a clip from the Netflix series Dead End: Paranormal Park in which the character Barney “outs” himself as trans. The clip circulated widely online and triggered criticism of the platform’s approach to children’s programming.
CWA said it reached out to Netflix to discuss its findings but said the company declined to respond. The group said the refusal “confirms their reckless disregard for children’s wellbeing and its circumvention of parental authority.”
Netflix has not issued a public statement about the report.
