The National Unity Party said it is unlikely to support the impeachment complaint against Vice President Sara Duterte unless new and decisive evidence is presented during congressional hearings.
In a statement reported Wednesday, the party said the complaint does not currently contain material that would justify its vote. It stressed that its position could change only if the factual basis of the case shifts in a significant way during formal proceedings in the House of Representatives.
“Unless compelling new evidence emerges during the course of these hearings that fundamentally alters the factual basis for the impeachment complaint, the NUP will most likely not vote in favor of this measure,” the party said.
The impeachment complaint was filed in the House, where lawmakers will determine whether it should advance. The NUP said it will review all evidence presented in the hearings and will not pre-judge the outcome.
The party cautioned against turning impeachment into a political tool. It said impeachment is a constitutional mechanism meant to enforce accountability for high public officials and must be handled with seriousness and discipline.
“The NUP believes that Congress must carefully allocate its time, focus, and institutional resources toward more pressing and urgent national concerns,” the party said.
It added that impeachment proceedings consume significant time and attention from both chambers of Congress. The party urged lawmakers to prioritize matters that directly affect economic stability, public safety, and the daily welfare of Filipinos.
The statement signals that support for the complaint in the House may hinge on whether new evidence emerges that substantially changes the case against the Vice President.
