The National Unity Party said it will not support an impeachment complaint against Vice President Sara Duterte if the allegations rely on weak or recycled evidence, stressing that the constitutional process requires a strong legal foundation.
The party made its position clear as discussions continued inside the House of Representatives of the Philippines over complaints filed against Duterte. NUP said lawmakers must carefully examine the strength of the allegations before deciding whether the complaint should move forward through the House justice panel.
“We won’t back a weak impeachment complaint,” the NUP said, warning that lawmakers should avoid supporting a case that cannot withstand legal scrutiny.
The party also emphasized that impeachment carries serious constitutional consequences and must not move forward without a solid evidentiary basis. “Impeachment is a serious constitutional process that must be anchored on clear, compelling, and credible evidence,” the NUP said.
NUP said it would not support a case that simply repeats earlier accusations without stronger documentation. “We reiterate that we cannot vote in favor of a rehashed case resting on previously presented information that, in our opinion, remain weak and inconclusive,” the party said.
The group urged complainants to present stronger evidence if they intend to pursue the case before the House justice panel. NUP said any impeachment complaint should clearly establish legal violations and provide documentation capable of withstanding scrutiny during congressional proceedings.
Vice President Duterte remains at the center of the political debate as lawmakers evaluate the allegations raised against her. The NUP position signals caution among members of Congress who believe impeachment should proceed only if the case meets the legal threshold required under the Constitution.
