Congressman Paolo “Pulong” Duterte issued a public statement as the International Criminal Court held its confirmation of charges hearing against former President Rody Duterte over alleged crimes against humanity linked to the anti-drug campaign.
The statement was released during the Feb. 23 to 27 proceedings in The Hague, where ICC judges are determining whether prosecutors have presented sufficient evidence for the case to proceed to trial.
Paolo Duterte’s remarks coincided with separate allegations raised by individuals identifying themselves as former Marines, along with lawyer Levito Baligod, claiming that about $2 million in cash-filled suitcases were allegedly delivered in Makati in 2023 for supposed ICC-related expenses. The ICC has denied receiving such funds, stating that it operates solely through its official budget funded by member states. Malacañang has also rejected the allegations, describing them as unsubstantiated.
In his statement, the Davao lawmaker questioned the credibility of the evidence being presented in the international proceedings and raised concerns about the motives behind the case. He also referenced the recent bribery claims in the context of the ongoing hearing.
The development highlights the continued public and political debate surrounding the ICC case, as the Duterte camp and its critics respond to the confirmation phase that will determine whether the charges advance to full trial.
