Senator Bong Go said he believes the Philippines is on track to become a major force in Asian sports, pointing to the steady progress of Filipino athletes and the need for a stronger, more unified support system to sustain that momentum.
Go expressed confidence that the country will emerge as a strong contender in future international competitions, saying the gains shown by Filipino athletes reflect what is possible when support structures are in place. Speaking during his sponsorship speech, he said he is “quite sure” the Philippines will eventually be recognized as a sports powerhouse in Asia.
He emphasized that athletic success is not achieved by talent alone. According to Go, performance at the highest level depends on coordination among government agencies and active cooperation with the private sector. He stressed that a unified system is critical to ensuring athletes receive consistent and effective support throughout their careers.
Go said recent achievements underscore the importance of bringing together key sports institutions, including the Philippine Sports Commission, the Philippine Olympic Committee, and private stakeholders. He noted that collaboration among these groups is necessary to protect athlete welfare and improve overall performance on the international stage.
The senator also said assistance should extend beyond funding. He called for continued programs that address training, development, and long-term well-being, adding that athletes carry national expectations every time they compete abroad.
Addressing Filipino athletes, Go described them as symbols of strength and inspiration who give the country hope during challenging times. He said their dedication has repeatedly united Filipinos and reflected what he called the true spirit of patriotism.
As chairman of the Senate committee on sports, Go said he will continue pushing for initiatives that promote sports development and athlete welfare. He also highlighted the role of sports in steering young people away from harmful activities, saying sustained investment in athletics helps build a stronger future for the country.
