The Sandiganbayan has acquitted former Vice President Jejomar “Jojo” Binay Sr., former Makati Mayor Jejomar “Junjun” Binay Jr., and several co-accused in the P2.2-billion Makati City Hall Parking Building II project.
In a decision by the court’s Third Division, the accused were cleared of charges of graft, malversation of public funds, and falsification of public documents. The court said the prosecution failed to establish guilt beyond reasonable doubt.
The acquittal also lifted all civil liabilities and removed hold departure orders against the accused.
The case stemmed from the construction of the parking building between 2007 and 2013, during the terms of the elder Binay and his son as mayors of Makati.
The Office of the Ombudsman filed the charges in 2016, alleging irregular bidding, overpricing, and payments for incomplete work.
The Binays denied the accusations. The case underwent hearings for nearly a decade before the Sandiganbayan issued its ruling.
The acquittal follows a separate ruling in January 2025, when the Sandiganbayan also cleared the Binays in the P1.3-billion Makati Science High School project case.
Jejomar Binay served as Vice President from 2010 to 2016 after more than two decades as mayor of Makati.
He ran for president in 2016 but lost, with corruption allegations linked to the Makati projects becoming central issues during his campaign.
Junjun Binay was mayor of Makati from 2010 to 2015. He was dismissed from office by the Ombudsman in 2015 over corruption cases and was ordered perpetually disqualified from holding public office in 2019, though some rulings were later overturned.
