A court decision in Seoul has reshaped South Korea’s political landscape in a single morning. The ruling targets a figure long linked to controversy during a turbulent presidency.
It follows years of investigations, public protests, and unanswered questions around power and privilege. This time, the judgment carried prison time. The verdict also set a precedent never seen before in the country’s modern history.
On Wednesday, the Seoul Central District Court sentenced Kim Keon Hee, the wife of former president Yoon Suk Yeol, to 20 months in prison for bribery. Judges found she accepted luxury gifts from figures linked to the Unification Church between April and July 2022.
Those items included a Graff diamond necklace and multiple Chanel handbags, valued at about 80 million won. Prosecutors said the gifts sought business and political favors during her husband’s presidency.
The court ruled Kim misused her position for personal benefit but acknowledged limits to her role. Judges said she did not directly solicit the bribes and noted her lack of a serious criminal record. As a result, the sentence fell far below the 15-year term prosecutors requested. The court also ordered her to repay 12.85 million won in cash and confiscated the diamond necklace.
However, the ruling also cleared Kim of several high-profile allegations. Judges acquitted her of stock price manipulation and claims she received free opinion polls before the 2022 presidential election. Separate cases remain pending, including accusations involving political recruitment tied to the Unification Church and gifts linked to government job appointments. Those charges have yet to reach trial.
The sentence carries broader significance because it follows the conviction of her husband, Yoon Suk Yeol, who is already serving a five-year prison term. Yoon was found guilty of abusing power and obstructing justice after his failed 2024 martial law bid, which led to his impeachment.
Together, the rulings mark the first time South Korea has jailed both members of a former presidential couple.
