Award-winning filmmaker Lav Diaz has suggested that comedian and television host Vice Ganda should run against Vice President Sara Duterte in the 2028 presidential elections.

Diaz said that fielding a pop culture icon like Vice Ganda could serve as a counterbalance to the Vice President, whom he described as a strong political force. He argued that only a figure with mass appeal outside of traditional politics could challenge Duterte effectively.

The director also proposed that Vice Ganda should run with a tandem partner from the political opposition. Among those he mentioned were Senator Risa Hontiveros, Congressman Chel Diokno, and former Vice President Leni Robredo.

According to Diaz, such a combination would pair celebrity influence with political credibility.

Diaz added that the strategy would be for Vice Ganda to secure an electoral victory and then step down, allowing a running mate to assume office. He claimed this would be a way to prevent what he described as the Duterte family’s continued dominance in Philippine politics.
