Superstar actress and Quezon City councilor Aiko Melendez drew attention online after sharing a pointed message on Instagram about free speech, truth, and journalism, accompanied by a photo of herself wearing a “FREE SPEECH CLUB” shirt from the Peanut Gallery Media Network.
In her post, Melendez framed freedom of speech as a matter rooted in truth rather than volume. She wrote, “Freedom of speech isn’t about noise it’s about truth.” The statement spread quickly across social media and prompted engagement from followers and fellow public figures.
Melendez explained that the shirt was worn as a deliberate expression aligned with principles she believes should guide public discourse. She added, “Wearing this shirt is a quiet stand for what’s right letting voices be heard, facts be told, and stories surface without fear or bias.”
She also underscored that fairness can serve as a form of resolve, particularly in environments shaped by pressure and scrutiny. Melendez linked protected expression to the public’s ability to access verified information, noting that truth gains ground when journalism is allowed to function without restraint.
Melendez has an extensive record in public service. She was first elected councilor of Quezon City’s 2nd District in 2001 and won reelection in 2004 and 2007, serving until 2010.
She returned to elective office in 2022 as councilor for the city’s 5th District and secured reelection in the May 2025 midterm polls. Melendez now chairs the City Council’s Committee on Justice and Human Rights, where her legislative initiatives have included the Paperless Ordinance to improve government efficiency and programs offering free legal aid to Persons Deprived of Liberty.
Her office has also provided medical assistance to indigent patients, organized medical missions, and led vaccination drives for senior citizens. She has partnered with public health institutions, including the Lung Center of the Philippines.
A multi-awarded Filipina actress who rose as a “Regal Baby” in the early 1980s and later became a leading lady in the 1990s, Melendez has maintained a visible presence across film, television, and politics. Her latest remarks place her squarely within the ongoing national conversation on free speech, accountability, and media trust, reflecting positions she has carried from public office to public life.
