Filipina tennis star Alex Eala has opened her 2026 season with a breakthrough surge, climbing to a new career-high world ranking of No. 45 on the WTA Tour following a string of strong early-year performances.
Eala rose from No. 49 after adding 11 ranking points, bringing her total to 1,163. The jump was anchored by a semifinal run at the ASB Classic in Auckland, New Zealand, where she advanced to the Final Four against a competitive international field. She followed that up with a milestone appearance in the main draw of the Australian Open, further solidifying her presence among the tour’s top players.
Her momentum carried into Melbourne, where she captured the Kooyong Classic exhibition title, signaling confidence and form ahead of the season’s first Grand Slam. The 20-year-old also made history at home by competing in the Philippine Women’s Open, marking her first professional tournament on Philippine soil.
Playing in front of a home crowd, Eala reached the quarterfinals before bowing out to eventual champion Camila Osorio, who also posted a ranking climb from No. 84 to No. 80. Osorio secured a straight-sets win, 6–4, 6–4, in the Last 8.
While the result ended Eala’s home campaign, the tournament carried broader significance. Her participation brought top-level women’s tennis to Filipino fans for the first time, offering visibility and inspiration to a new generation of local players.
With early results translating into tangible ranking gains, Eala’s 2026 start signals both competitive progress on the global stage and a growing impact on Philippine tennis.
