Jake Paul is set to face former heavyweight champion Anthony Joshua in a bout that has raised widespread concern in boxing because of the extreme mismatch in weight, size, reach, and professional experience. Paul, who stands 6 foot 1 with a 76 inch reach, last weighed 199.4 pounds, placing him below the heavyweight limit.
Joshua, a full heavyweight at 6 foot 6 with an 82 inch reach, weighed 252.5 pounds in his most recent fight, creating a gap that many say makes the contest unsafe.
The difference extends beyond physical measurements. Paul turned professional in 2020 and has fought for roughly five years, while Joshua has been a professional since 2013, giving him more than a decade of elite-level experience, including multiple world title reigns and championship bouts against top heavyweights.
The fight has drawn criticism from regulators and fighters who argue that the size and experience disparity alone puts Paul at serious risk. Joshua’s longtime promoter Eddie Hearn labeled the bout a “catastrophic mismatch,” citing the gulf in physical size and professional pedigree.
Former champions have also warned that heavyweight power fundamentally alters the stakes. Amir Khan said, “Because it only takes one shot. One bad night, one clean shot, and someone can get seriously hurt,” adding that Joshua’s advantages could have lasting consequences.
Despite the concerns, Paul insists he is ready to compete, while Joshua has said he is treating the fight as seriously as any other. The matchup has reignited debate over crossover boxing events that place fighters from vastly different weight classes and experience levels in the same ring.
