The legendary Charlie Kirk, 31, co-founder of Turning Point USA and one of the most prominent conservative voices of his generation, was shot and killed on September 10, 2025, while speaking at UVU.
The attack took place during the launch of his “American Comeback Tour,” which drew hundreds of students to the Orem campus.
Witnesses said the gunfire erupted as Kirk was answering a question about mass shootings. A single shot, reportedly fired from about 200 yards away, struck him in the neck.
Emergency responders brought Kirk to a hospital, but doctors later pronounced him dead. Utah Governor Spencer Cox condemned the killing as a “political assassination,” while police confirmed that one person had been detained and later released. The investigation remains ongoing.
The killing drew immediate reactions from national figures. President Donald Trump called him “The Great, and even Legendary, Charlie Kirk,” praising his ability to connect with America’s youth.
Former President Barack Obama described the act as “despicable violence” with no place in democracy. Elon Musk took to X, declaring, “The Left is the party of murder,” while David Sacks, AI and Crypto Czar, remembered him as “a self-made man, a young husband and father, and a patriot” whose openness to debate made him a target.
On Fox News, Jesse Watters described the shooting as a grim message to Americans. “
The message is shut your mouth,” Watters said. “If you can be murdered for speaking your mind in America, then America’s done. We might as well live in the dark ages. And this isn’t the first time this has happened. This is just the worst time.”
He cited past incidents of political violence, including the shooting of President Donald Trump, threats against Justice Brett Kavanaugh, and attacks on Jewish Americans outside embassies.
“It’s officially over now,” Watters said.
“After today, we’re not taking it anymore. They’re telling us we’re at war. We’re in a war right now to save this country… The way to win is to do what Charlie did. Speak your mind louder. Tell the truth more.”
Former FBI agent Stuart Kaplan also raised alarms over the nature of the killing, describing it as a sophisticated operation.
“This was a very well-planned, very well-orchestrated plot that was put in motion days before,” Kaplan said in a televised interview. “
This assassination is indicative of a professional hit.” He pointed to the shooter’s ability to position himself, fire a precise shot at Kirk despite the tent covering, and escape undetected.
“This was not some amateur who just got up on a rooftop,” Kaplan said, stressing that the planning, execution, and escape showed a level of training and experience.
Kirk rose to prominence after founding Turning Point USA in 2012, expanding it into a nationwide movement focused on conservative youth activism.
He gained a massive online following through speeches, debates, and podcasts, consistently drawing large crowds and billions of views.
Admired on the Right and criticized on the Left, he built a reputation as a combative but charismatic debater who relished open confrontation.
