A magnitude 7.6 earthquake struck off the coast of Davao Oriental at 9:43 a.m. on Friday, October 10, 2025, according to the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS-DOST). The tremor had a shallow depth of only 10 kilometers, causing strong shaking in nearby provinces and several parts of Mindanao. The earthquake’s epicenter was recorded southeast of Manay, Davao Oriental, and was felt as far as Bukidnon, Cagayan de Oro City, and Iligan City. Residents across these areas reported intense ground movement, with some structures experiencing minor damage. Authorities warned that aftershocks are expected in the coming hours.
Immediately after the earthquake, Phivolcs issued a tsunami warning for coastal provinces across Mindanao and the Visayas. The warning covers Davao Oriental, Dinagat Islands, Surigao del Norte, Surigao del Sur, Eastern Samar, Southern Leyte, and Leyte. The agency said the first tsunami waves may arrive between 9:43 a.m. and 11:43 a.m. and could persist for several hours.
Wave heights of more than one meter above the normal tide level are possible. Phivolcs urged residents in coastal areas to immediately move to higher ground or farther inland and to stay away from the shoreline until further notice.
Boat owners were advised to secure their vessels, while those already at sea were instructed to remain offshore in deep waters until cleared by authorities.
Local disaster officials have been placed on high alert, conducting rapid assessments of affected areas and assisting with precautionary evacuations.
Power interruptions were reported in some parts of Davao Oriental, while communication lines remain congested due to heavy call traffic. Government agencies, emergency responders, and local government units continue to coordinate for monitoring and response efforts as more information becomes available.
