Alex Eala is headed into a blockbuster quarterfinal clash against world No. 4 Coco Gauff at the Dubai Tennis Championships, marking one of the biggest matches of her young career. The 20-year-old Filipina secured her place in the last eight of the WTA 1000 event in the United Arab Emirates after defeating Romania’s Sorana Cîrstea 7-5, 6-4 in the Round of 16, a win that followed her earlier upset of world No. 8 Jasmine Paolini.
The matchup against Gauff places Eala opposite one of the top players on the women’s tour. Gauff, a former No. 2 in the world and one of the tournament’s leading seeds, advanced after a three-set victory over Belgium’s Elise Mertens. The American has been a steady contender in major events, raising the stakes for Eala as she prepares for her toughest challenge yet in Dubai.
Eala enters the quarterfinal with confidence built from back-to-back wins over higher-ranked opponents. Against Cîrstea, she managed critical points with composed baseline play and timely service breaks. “The key to today was staying calm and trusting my shots,” she said. She added, “Every round is such a battle and so filled with tension. So I’m really happy with how I performed.”
Looking ahead, Eala remains focused. “I think I’m in a good path. I think if I continue like this, the next match will be great,” she said as she turned her attention to Gauff. Eala will take on Gauff at 11 p.m. on Thuraday, Philippine time.
