Filipina tennis player Alex Eala reached a new career milestone early in 2026, climbing to world No. 49 in the latest WTA rankings released on January 12.
The jump followed Eala’s breakthrough run at the ASB Classic in Auckland, New Zealand, where she advanced to the semifinals. She began the year ranked No. 53 and moved into the world’s top 50 for only the second time in her career, continuing the upward trajectory she started late last season.
“This year is about being braver, dreaming bigger, loving harder, and doing more for the people and passions that matter most,” Eala wrote in an Instagram post reflecting on her start to the year.
She added, “The past year reminded me how powerful love, support, and community can be. Now, I’m excited for what this new year brings — new goals to chase, new memories to create, and more meaningful moments.”
Eala’s Auckland campaign featured a series of notable wins against higher-ranked and experienced opponents, underscoring her growing presence on the tour. Her run ended in the semifinals after she sustained a back injury during the match, forcing her to battle through physical limitations.
Despite the injury setback, Eala’s performance early in the season positioned her as one of the fastest-rising players in women’s tennis, setting the tone for the months ahead as she continues to build consistency at the highest level.
