Kendrick Lamar and Lady Gaga are setting the stage for a global showdown at the 2026 Grammy Awards. The Recording Academy dropped this year’s nominations, confirming Lamar as the frontrunner with nine nods for his acclaimed album GNX, while Gaga follows with seven for Mayhem, her high-voltage return to electro-pop.
For the first time in Grammy history, K-pop artists have entered the Song of the Year race, signaling how far the genre has come from fan-driven virality to full industry recognition.
Lamar’s GNX leads the Album of the Year category, making him a top contender to break a two-decade drought for rap in the Grammys’ highest honor. His collaboration with SZA on Luther — already a Billboard No. 1 hit — also scored nominations for Record of the Year and Song of the Year.
Gaga, meanwhile, earned nods across pop and main categories, with Abracadabra shortlisted for both Song and Record of the Year. The Academy called her album Mayhem “a confident mix of reinvention and nostalgia,” cementing her comeback to her roots.
Beyond the two headliners, K-pop has made Grammy history. Rosé and Bruno Mars’ APT and Hunter/x’s Golden are both nominated for Song of the Year. Rosé becomes the first K-pop idol to be recognized in any of the “Big Four” categories, while Hunter/x is the first animated band ever shortlisted in a main category. Bad Bunny follows close behind with six nominations for Debí Tirar Más Fotos, praised for blending reggaeton with live instrumentation. Sabrina Carpenter, Tyler, The Creator, and reunited hip-hop duo Clipse round out the top races, marking the first time three rap albums share an Album of the Year nomination list.
British acts are also making noise. Yungblud scored three rock nominations, while Olivia Dean, Lola Young, and Wet Leg join the international wave of recognition. Taylor Swift is absent this year — not snubbed, but out of the eligibility window. Her latest record The Life of a Showgirl will qualify in 2027, a year that’s already expected to be another heavy competition.
With voting now open and the ceremony set for February 1, 2026, the Grammys are shaping up to be a reflection of how global the sound of mainstream music has become. For the first time in years, pop, rap, and K-Pop are sharing the same stage — and this time, it feels like anyone could win.
