Senate President Pro Tempore Ping Lacson has confirmed that he is stepping down as chair of the Senate Committee on Electoral Reforms and People’s Participation, allowing Senator Risa Hontiveros to assume leadership of the panel.
Lacson said he decided to relinquish the post to make room for Hontiveros as the Senate moves forward with discussions on electoral reform measures, including proposals linked to political dynasties. The committee handles legislation affecting elections, voter participation, and reforms that have remained pending across several Congresses.
“Ire-relinquish ko mamaya kay Sen. Risa kasi puno ako sa blue ribbon Pro Temp pa ako, so, yun ang na-discuss natin—and amenable naman si Sen. Risa,” Lacson said.
With the change, Hontiveros is set to preside over committee hearings, manage deliberations, and steer the review of reform bills under the panel’s jurisdiction. The transition takes effect as the Senate prepares to revisit measures that have long faced resistance despite repeated filings.
No timetable has been announced for the next set of hearings under the new leadership.
