Manila Mayor Isko Moreno announced an increase in the daily subsidy for jeepney drivers under the city’s “Libreng Sakay” program, raising the rate from ₱3,000 to ₱3,500.
The adjustment updates the compensation set during the program’s earlier rollout, when drivers were provided around ₱3,000 per day in exchange for offering free rides along designated routes. The program allows drivers to receive a fixed daily income from the city government instead of collecting fares from passengers.
City officials said the increase reflects higher fuel prices and rising operating costs, which have affected the viability of earlier subsidy levels for participating drivers.
The “Libreng Sakay” initiative has been implemented by the Manila City Government (Manila Public Information Office) as a response to transport pressures, particularly during periods of fuel price increases. Under the scheme, commuters continue to receive free rides while drivers are paid directly by the city.
Transport groups and drivers have previously reported that earlier daily earnings were not enough to cover expenses; officials said the increase to ₱3,500 is meant to provide stronger income support as the program continues.
