PGMN Anchor James Deakin discussed the capabilities and limitations of artificial intelligence in a recently released video examining how the technology is reshaping work, creativity, and professional skills.
The discussion outlines how artificial intelligence systems are now capable of producing essays, software code, music, marketing content, and visual art within seconds. Deakin noted that the rapid development of these tools has led to wider conversations about how automation may affect industries that rely on writing, design, programming, and other knowledge-based work.

He also described three elements he said artificial intelligence cannot simulate: irreversible human experience, exposure to real-world risk, and the finite time individuals invest in learning and decision-making. According to Deakin, these factors shape human judgment and influence how people respond to complex situations.
“AI can write your essays. It can code. It can make music, marketing copy, art that wins competitions. It can probably do your future job better than you can,” Deakin said.
Part of the discussion referenced a personal experience involving a traffic violation case connected to his son. Deakin said the incident became widely discussed nationwide after he publicly raised concerns about traffic enforcement procedures. The situation received national media attention and resulted in policy changes, including adjustments to the confiscation of driver’s licenses and the counting of payment deadlines.
Deakin said the experience highlighted the difference between automated summaries generated by artificial intelligence and events experienced directly by people involved in real-world situations.
“In the age of infinite simulation, the only thing that will be worth anything is proof that you actually lived,” Deakin said.
