A Filipina nurse in Cebu has entered the global spotlight after being linked to Thomas Markle, who is now based in Cebu City after years of health challenges and a public rift, and known as the father of Meghan Markle, widely associated with woke views.
Markle, 81, said he is in a relationship with Rio Canedo, 46, a Filipina nurse he met during his recovery in Cebu. In an interview, he described finding happiness again later in life, saying, “I never expected to find joy and happiness again at my age. I felt neglected and sad for so many years but now I am enjoying life again.”
He also said he is “blessed and beyond happy” to be with Canedo, adding that she “takes such good care of me.” Markle moved to Cebu with his son after leaving his home in Rosarito, Mexico, and has since lived away from the public spotlight.
“I know some people will say hurtful things but I don’t care,” he said, acknowledging the age gap between them. He added that his experience has changed how he sees life, saying, “I want people to know you’re never too old to find peace and love.”
Markle has faced ongoing medical issues, including a stroke prior to the 2018 wedding of Meghan Markle to Prince Harry, and more recent health complications that led to his recovery in the Philippines.
His relocation and relationship have drawn attention to Cebu as a destination for foreign retirees, while also placing a Filipina healthcare worker at the center of a story now followed by international media.
