Melanie Perkins, the Filipino-Australian CEO and co-founder of Canva, has not only revolutionized graphic design but also built a $40 billion empire that’s changed how the world communicates visually.

At just 37 years old, Perkins transformed the creative landscape by democratizing design through her platform, making it accessible to millions—no design experience required.

Born in Perth, Australia, to a Filipino Malaysian father and an Australian mother, Perkins’ entrepreneurial spirit emerged early. With a net worth of $5.8 billion as of 2025, she is among the wealthiest women globally.

She launched her first business at 14, selling handmade scarves, and by 19, dropped out of university to pursue her startup ventures.

Her persistence paid off when, after overcoming 100 rejections, Perkins found success, ultimately attracting high-profile investors like Woody Harrelson and Owen Wilson.

Today, Canva serves 220 million monthly users, helping individuals and businesses alike bring their creative ideas to life with ease.

Turning Skepticism into Success: The Canva Journey

At first, investors were skeptical of Canva’s potential, but the platform has since proved the doubters wrong.

What began as a tool for creating basic graphics has now transformed into an indispensable design tool, widely used by individuals and companies alike.

Canva’s valuation soared to $40 billion in 2021, and with over 6 million teams paying for its premium version, Canva continues to lead the way in making design accessible to everyone. One of the most impressive aspects of Perkins’ leadership is her dedication to giving back.

Along with her husband, Cliff Obrecht, Perkins has pledged to donate more than 80% of their stake in Canva to the Canva Foundation, with a focus on philanthropy and alleviating the effects of climate change and global wealth inequality.

Perkins also maintains a commitment to integrating new technologies into Canva’s platform, including AI tools that enhance productivity and creativity.

Leadership, Innovation, and the Future of Canva

As CEO, Perkins remains at the forefront of Canva’s innovation, leading the company’s annual “Canva Create” event.

She continues to be a driving force behind the platform’s growth and expansion, particularly focusing on the integration of AI technologies to further streamline the creative process.

At Canva Create 2025, held on April 10th, Melanie Perkins unveiled a range of new tools, solidifying Canva’s position at the forefront of design innovation.

The event featured updates like Canva Sheets for visual data storytelling, Magic Studio at Scale for fast content generation, and Canva AI, a voice-enabled assistant capable of designing, writing, and coding from a single prompt.

Other highlights included Canva Code, allowing users to build interactive designs without coding, and Visual Studio 2.0, a connected design space for creating docs, presentations, websites, and more.

Despite her focus on Canva’s growth, Perkins emphasizes the importance of personal well-being, maintaining a balance between her professional and personal life.

Through mindful walking, meditation, and reflection, she ensures she stays grounded, preventing burnout while managing her leadership role. With these innovations and a focus on mental health, Perkins is leading Canva toward a future where creativity and wellness go hand in hand.

Philanthropy and the Canva Foundation

Perkins and Obrecht’s commitment to social responsibility goes beyond just business. Through their foundation, the couple plans to donate a significant portion of their wealth to causes that matter most to them.

They are committed to addressing global issues like wealth inequality and climate change.

By ensuring Canva’s success is also tied to meaningful social contributions, Perkins continues to shape a legacy that blends entrepreneurial excellence with global change.

Her Philosophy on Rejection

Reflecting on her journey, Perkins shared, “There will always be people who don’t like you or your idea for whatever reason, and it’s important to see each rejection as redirection to helping you find the right people who believe in you and your vision, even if this takes years.”

In 2025, Melanie Perkins remains an inspiring figure in the tech and entrepreneurial space.

As a Filipino-Australian CEO, she continues to show that with passion, vision, and a commitment to giving back, it is possible to create something truly impactful for the world.
