Transport group Manibela began its three day transport strike on Tuesday to protest the government’s handling of jeepney modernization and the issues raised by drivers and operators. The group said the strike was driven by unresolved problems involving modernization requirements and the alleged “payola” or bribery system inside the Land Transportation Office.
“Public transportation in Metro Manila is paralyzed” one of the group’s posts read. Another statement said “No jeepneys are operating Metro Manila is paralyzed This is caused by the excessive arrogance of the Department of Transportation, LTFRB, and Land Transportation Office. Yet, they lack concern and understanding for the Filipino people, especially for commuters, workers, and students.” These statements reflect Manibela’s claims regarding the situation during the strike.
Manibela also criticized Malacañang’s directive for the Department of Transportation to revisit the concerns raised by jeepney drivers and operators, saying “the reality on the ground demands more than a passing glance.” These remarks express the group’s dissatisfaction with the government’s response.
The Philippine National Police placed vehicles on standby to assist stranded passengers, according to acting PNP chief Lt. Gen. Jose Melencio Nartatez Jr.
