Charles Barkley expressed disbelief at Michael Jordan’s decision to join NBC Sports as a “special contributor” for its NBA coverage starting in the 2025-26 season. Barkley, a longtime rival and friend, said, “I have no idea what Michael is going to do.

I was 100% shocked, but I don’t think he’s gonna do a lot. Period.” The announcement, made during NBC’s dupfront presentation, marks Jordan’s first foray into broadcasting, sparking intrigue about his role and motives.

With the NBA icon’s storied legacy and private persona, his low-key return to the spotlight raises questions about his impact on NBC’s revitalized coverage.

Jordan’s involvement comes as NBC reclaims NBA broadcasting rights after a 23-year hiatus, secured through an 11-year, $76 billion deal with the NBA and WNBA.

The network, which aired Jordan’s six Chicago Bulls championships from 1990 to 2002, is banking on nostalgia, reviving the “Roundball Rock” theme and adding stars like Jamal Crawford, Reggie Miller, and Carmelo Anthony to its roster.

Jordan’s role remains vague, with reports suggesting primarily pre-taped segments rather than regular studio appearances. Barkley, known for his candid Inside the NBA style, doubts Jordan will embrace a demanding on-air presence, quipping he’s “probably trying to fix The Grove,” his exclusive Florida golf course.

Barkley’s shock reflects Jordan’s reclusive post-playing career. Despite owning the Charlotte Hornets and co-founding NASCAR’s 23XI Racing, Jordan has shunned media roles, unlike peers like Barkley or Shaquille O’Neal.

His 2020 The Last Dance documentary reignited his cultural relevance, but he’s avoided consistent public engagement.Dominique Wilkins is speculating a “huge payday,” with unconfirmed reports of a $40 million annual deal.

Barkley, who declined NBC’s offer due to its heavy workload, sees Jordan’s move as surprising but minimal.

NBC’s coup in landing Jordan signals its ambition to reclaim NBA prominence, but Barkley’s skepticism tempers expectations. Will Jordan’s presence draw viewers or remain a nostalgic cameo? As the season nears, his role—and its effect on fans—remains a compelling mystery.
