After months of speculation, Hamas has officially confirmed the death of Mohammed Deif, the elusive commander of the Al-Qassam Brigades.
Known as “the cat with nine lives”, Deif had survived multiple Israeli assassination attempts over the years, but his luck finally ran out.
The End of Hamas’ Most Notorious Military Leader
Deif, accused by Israel of masterminding the October 7 attack, was reportedly killed in an Israeli airstrike in July 2024.
Israel had announced his death months ago, but Hamas remained silent—until now. In a statement, Hamas’ military wing declared Deif a “martyr,” confirming that he was killed alongside his deputy, Marwan Issa, and other high-ranking operatives.
A Ghost in the Shadows
For nearly three decades, Deif was one of Israel’s most-wanted men. His real name, Mohammed Diab al-Masri, was rarely used, and few images of him existed. In the rare footage released by Hamas, he always appeared masked or in silhouette.
Even when Israel published a photo of him earlier this year—showing him missing an eye—they did not specify when it was taken.
His legend grew as he survived multiple assassination attempts, including a 2014 Israeli airstrike that killed his wife and infant son. Over the years, he was credited with overseeing Hamas’ vast tunnel networks beneath Gaza, which have played a crucial role in the ongoing conflict.
What Happens Now?
With Deif gone, the leadership of Hamas’ military operations will likely shift, but his death raises more questions than answers. Will this weaken Hamas’ military strategy? Or will his death fuel further escalation in the region?
As tensions between Israel and Hamas continue, one thing is clear—the war is far from over.
