In a move that’s shaking up the gaming world more than a noob in a ranked match, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) has officially announced that the inaugural Olympic Esports Games will be held in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, in 2027.

The Olympic Esports Games Finally Gets a Green Light

Originally slated for 2025, the event faced delays due to concerns over format and game selection. But now, with a clear roadmap, the IOC is pressing ‘Start’ on this ambitious venture.

Teaming up with the Esports World Cup Foundation (EWCF), the IOC aims to establish proper qualification pathways and align national esports ecosystems with global standards.

This partnership is set to level up the credibility and structure of competitive gaming on the world stage.

Saudi Arabia’s Growing Influence in Esports

Saudi Arabia isn’t just hosting; they’re going all-in. The kingdom has been making power moves in the esports arena, including organizing the Esports World Cup in Riyadh and investing heavily in gaming companies like ESL FACEIT Group and Hero Esports.

Critics, however, have accused Saudi Arabia of using these events to gloss over its human rights record, a tactic some dub ‘esports washing.’

IOC President Thomas Bach stated, “There is now a very clear roadmap to the historic first-ever Olympic Esports Games.” With preparations underway, the ‘Road to the Olympic Esports Games’ starts this year, signaling the IOC’s commitment to integrating esports into the Olympic movement.

Esports on the Global Stage: A New Era for the Olympics

As the lines between traditional sports and esports continue to blur, the 2027 Olympic Esports Games could be a game-changer, bringing competitive gaming to a global audience and redefining what it means to go for the gold.
