Palestine’s ambassador to the Philippines has called on the Philippine government to consider diplomatic and economic measures against Israel following recent policy decisions affecting the occupied West Bank.
Palestinian Ambassador Mounir Anastas said the Palestinian embassy has formally communicated with the Department of Foreign Affairs, urging concrete action in response to Israel’s February 8 decision that would further expand settlement activity and administrative control in the West Bank. The embassy said it has not yet received an official response from the Philippine government.
According to Anastas, the request focuses on imposing what the embassy described as “meaningful diplomatic and economic consequences,” which could include limits on trade or other forms of engagement. He said the measures approved by Israel’s security cabinet would make it easier for Israeli settlers to acquire land in the West Bank and would give Israeli authorities broader powers over areas where Palestinians live.
The Palestinian embassy said these steps violate international law and existing United Nations resolutions governing occupied territories. It also raised concerns about the effects of the measures on Palestinian civilians in the area.
Asked about the implications for Philippine-Israeli relations, Anastas said any decision on how to respond lies solely with the Philippine government, adding that action should align with the country’s stated commitment to human rights and international law.
The Philippines maintains long-standing diplomatic ties with Israel, including cooperation in defense, labor, and trade. At the same time, Manila recognizes the State of Palestine and has consistently expressed support for a two-state solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.
The Department of Foreign Affairs has previously said the Philippines favors dialogue and a balanced approach in addressing developments in the region. As of publication, the DFA has not issued a public response to the call.
