Women’s rights group Gabriela has called for accountability from Pasig congressional candidate Christian “Ian” Sia following his controversial remarks about single mothers.
During a campaign event on March 28, 2025, Sia made a statement that many have deemed offensive, suggesting that female solo parents who are still menstruating and feeling lonely could “sleep with him once a year,” inviting interested individuals to register at a designated table.
Gabriela’s Call for Respect and Dignity
Gabriela labeled Sia’s comments as “lewd” and “misogynist,” asserting that such statements degrade solo mothers by reducing them to mere objects for male gratification.
The organization emphasized that solo mothers should be respected for their resilience and dedication, not subjected to demeaning remarks.
They also urged the Commission on Elections (Comelec) to investigate whether Sia’s statements constitute an election offense, highlighting the need for candidates to uphold respect and dignity, especially towards marginalized sectors.
Angelu de Leon Joins the Outrage Over Sia’s Remarks
Actress and Pasig City Councilor Angelu de Leon echoed Gabriela’s sentiments, expressing her dismay over Sia’s remarks.
De Leon, who chairs the Committee on Social Services and Solo Parent Affairs, emphasized that such language is unacceptable, especially from someone seeking public office.
She reiterated that disrespect towards women has no place in Pasig.
A Broader Discussion on Respect in Political Campaigns
This incident has ignited broader discussions about the importance of respectful discourse in political campaigns and the necessity for candidates to promote policies that support solo parents rather than making derogatory comments.
Advocacy groups continue to call for increased awareness and sensitivity towards the challenges faced by solo parents, urging political figures to contribute positively to their welfare.
