The Philippine National Police (PNP) has reported a 26.76% decline in crime nationwide from January 1 to February 14, 2025, compared to the same period last year.

Focus crimes—including theft, robbery, rape, murder, homicide, physical injury, and carnapping—fell from 4,817 cases in early 2024 to 3,528 this year, indicating a significant improvement in public safety.S

Among these, rape saw the most substantial decline, dropping by 50.6% from 1,261 cases last year to 623 cases this year. Year-on-year data also showed a broader downward trend, with focus crimes decreasing by 7.31% from 41,717 incidents in 2023 to 38,667 in 2024.

Metro Manila Crime Rates Fall by 21.71% as Police Work with the Community

In Metro Manila, the crime rate dropped by 21.71% between January 1 and February 15, 2025, compared to the same timeframe in 2024.

The number of focus crimes in the region fell from 852 cases to 667, reflecting a decrease across key offenses such as homicide, rape, physical injuries, murder, and theft. Crime solution efficiency also improved, rising from 93.91% last year to 95.84% this year.

PNP’s Strategy: Police Visibility and Tech-Driven Solutions Drive Crime Reduction

PNP Chief Police General Rommel Marbil attributed the decrease to intensified police visibility, intelligence-driven operations, and the expanded use of digital surveillance technologies.

He emphasized that law enforcement is not merely responding to crime but proactively working to prevent it. He also addressed public perception, noting that social media has amplified awareness of crimes, making them appear more frequent, even as actual incidents decline.

However, he stressed that these platforms have also become valuable tools in accelerating investigations and bringing offenders to justice.

Social Media Impact: Raising Awareness but Accelerating Investigations

National Capital Region Police Office (NCRPO) Director Brig. Gen. Anthony Aberin credited the sustained crime reduction in Metro Manila to strong police-community partnerships.

He noted that active public cooperation, timely reporting of incidents, and strengthened law enforcement efforts have played a crucial role in keeping crime rates low.
