The world is gearing up to welcome Lunar New Year 2025, a 15-day celebration that begins on January 29 and marks the start of the Year of the Snake.

Expect vibrant festivities filled with firecrackers, red banners, feasts, and lanterns, all rooted in ancient traditions meant to usher in prosperity and good fortune.

From the significance of the Snake in the Chinese zodiac to the grand Lantern Festival finale, here’s everything you need to know about this year’s Lunar New Year celebration.

Why is 2025 the Year of the Snake?

Lunar New Year follows a 12-year zodiac cycle, with each year represented by an animal. The Snake, associated with wisdom, intuition, and transformation, takes center stage in 2025.

People born under this sign are believed to be deep thinkers and highly strategic, much like famous past Snakes such as Mahatma Gandhi and J.K. Rowling.

In Chinese astrology, every year’s fortune is influenced by the positions of the Tai Sui (stellar deities), making temple visits for blessings a common tradition during the New Year.

The Legend Behind Firecrackers and Red Banners

Ever wonder why firecrackers, red lanterns, and banners dominate Lunar New Year decorations? It all traces back to the myth of Nian, a monstrous creature that terrorized villages every new year.

According to legend, an old man discovered that Nian feared loud noises, bright lights, and the color red, leading to the widespread use of these elements to drive away evil spirits and bad luck.

This is why wearing red, lighting fireworks, and decorating homes with red banners remain essential customs, believed to bring protection and good fortune for the year ahead.

Reunion Dinners: Feasting for Fortune

Lunar New Year Eve (January 28, 2025) is all about family. Households gather for the reunion dinner, an elaborate feast where every dish carries symbolic meaning:

  • Dumplings (Jiaozi) – Resemble gold ingots, symbolizing wealth.
  • Fish (Yu) – Represents abundance, as the word for fish sounds like “surplus” in Chinese.
  • Longevity Noodles – Served uncut to represent a long life.

Throughout the festival, families also exchange red envelopes (hongbao/lai see) filled with money, a tradition meant to bless younger generations with prosperity.

Day 15: The Lantern Festival Lights Up the Sky

Lunar New Year reaches its grand finale on February 12, 2025, with the Lantern Festival, a day to admire glowing lantern displays and celebrate the first full moon of the year.

In ancient times, this was one of the few occasions when young men and women could meet publicly, earning it the nickname “Chinese Valentine’s Day”.

Today, lantern processions, riddles, and fireworks bring the celebrations to a dazzling close.

Welcoming a Year of Wisdom and Transformation

As the Year of the Snake unfolds, many will seek guidance from zodiac predictions, temple blessings, and symbolic traditions to ensure a smooth and prosperous year.

Whether you’re celebrating with family feasts, setting off firecrackers, or lighting lanterns, Lunar New Year is a time of renewal, connection, and optimism.
