A medevac plane carrying six people, including a pediatric patient, crashed in northeast Philadelphia on Friday evening, resulting in a fiery explosion that impacted multiple homes and vehicles, officials said.

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) confirmed that the twin-engine Learjet 55 crashed at approximately 6:30 p.m. local time shortly after departing from Northeast Philadelphia Airport. The aircraft was en route to Springfield-Branson National Airport in Missouri.

Jet Rescue Air Ambulance, the company operating the flight, stated that there were four crew members, one pediatric medical patient, and an escort on board. The company has yet to confirm any survivors.

Authorities, including the FAA and the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB), are actively investigating the crash. Philadelphia Mayor Cherelle Parker reported that multiple houses and vehicles were damaged but did not confirm the number of fatalities.

The city’s Office of Emergency Management categorized the incident as a “major emergency,” with road closures near Cottman and Bustleton Avenues.

Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro announced that he had spoken with Mayor Parker and assured that all necessary state resources would be made available to aid in the response and investigation.

Air traffic control communications recorded a callout for the aircraft shortly after takeoff, but no response was received. Data from ADS-B Exchange showed that the plane reached an altitude of 1,650 feet before rapidly descending at a rate of 11,000 feet per minute.

President Donald Trump addressed the tragedy, stating on social media:

“So sad to see the plane go down in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. More innocent souls lost. Our people are totally engaged. First Responders are already being given credit for doing a great job.”

The crash comes just days after a deadly mid-air collision over Washington, D.C., in which an American Airlines jet and a U.S. Army Black Hawk helicopter crashed over the Potomac River, killing 67 people.

As investigators work to determine the cause of the crash, Jet Rescue Air Ambulance has expressed deep concern for the families of those on board and any potential victims on the ground.

“Our immediate concern is for the patient’s family, our personnel, their families, and other victims that may have been hurt on the ground. More information will be released as it becomes available,” the company stated.

Authorities urge the public to avoid the affected area as emergency personnel continue their response efforts. Further updates are expected as the investigation progresses.
