A police officer who lost his left hand while responding to an armed man in Camarines Sur has had it successfully reattached through reconstructive surgery. PSSgT Noli M. Miraña sustained the severe injury during a police operation on Aug. 22 in Barangay Calalahan, San Jose. Doctors at Bicol Medical Center (BMC) in Naga City successfully restored the severed hand after the incident, which also left Miraña with a facial injury.
Miraña, a member of the San Jose Municipal Police Station, responded to the area with fellow officers after receiving a report of an armed man running amok.
Police said the officers initially tried to persuade the man to surrender peacefully, but the suspect allegedly charged at them and attacked Miraña with a bolo.
The weapon struck Miraña in the face and left hand, severing the latter. Responders brought both the injured officer and the suspect to medical facilities following the confrontation.
Miraña was later transferred to BMC for specialized treatment, where doctors performed reconstructive surgery to reattach his severed hand.
Authorities said doctors were able to reconnect two major arteries in Miraña’s hand and are hoping he can regain at least some movement or functionality, even if full use of the hand cannot be restored.
Miraña was awarded the Medalya ng Sugatang Magiting on Monday for his bravery in the line of duty, along with cash assistance.
