Japan has pushed internet technology into extraordinary territory, with researchers transmitting data at 1.02 petabits per second over 1,802 kilometers—a speed roughly 9.3 million times faster than the Philippines’ average fixed broadband speed of 109.86 Mbps.
At about 127,500 gigabytes per second, a connection operating at that rate could theoretically download an entire Netflix library in less than a second. Data collections that typically require hours or even days to transfer could instead move almost instantaneously.
The breakthrough provides a glimpse of the network capacity that is increasingly needed for artificial intelligence, cloud computing, streaming, data centers and remote work. Networks capable of handling such volumes could support substantially heavier data traffic between cities, servers and major digital hubs.
Japan’s National Institute of Information and Communications Technology said the result “represents a major step forward in developing scalable, high-capacity networks and addressing the world’s growing demand for data.”
Researchers achieved the record using a 19-core optical fiber designed to fit within roughly the same diameter as conventional fiber cables. The technology could allow network operators to increase capacity without having to completely rebuild existing infrastructure.
That level of connectivity remains far beyond what most Philippine internet users experience, although the country’s network performance has continued to improve. Philippine users nevertheless remain behind several of their Southeast Asian neighbors in key measures of internet speed.
Ookla data from August 2025 put the Philippines’ median fixed broadband speed at 105.17 Mbps, ranking the country 54th worldwide. In Manila, 5G availability reached 50.4%, while Cebu recorded 44.5%.
