President Bongbong Marcos state visit to Japan put Philippine tourism and infrastructure before major Japanese banks, trading houses, and corporations, with agencies reporting about ₱210 billion in investment pledges, pipeline opportunities, financial support, and tourism-related prospects from the Tokyo trip.

The May 26 to 29 visit had Marcos leading meetings meant to bring Japanese capital into sectors that affect travel, transport links, jobs, and regional growth. For tourism, the stakes are practical. Projects need roads, airports, utilities, hotels, logistics, and workers before they can turn into income for communities.

The Department of Tourism said Philippine and Japanese firms forged deals covering tourism and industrial infrastructure. It cited Sumitomo Mitsui Financial Group, Mizuho Financial Group, Itochu, Sumitomo, Sojitz, Toyota, and Panasonic as a sign of “immense international confidence” in the country’s economic trajectory.

The DOT said the government wants foreign investments to yield “inclusive growth, regional connectivity and sustainable job generation for Filipinos.” That makes the Japan visit an economic test for the Marcos administration, especially in tourism, where commitments still have to become projects and livelihoods.

The DTI also reported Japanese investment commitments. Trade Secretary Cristina Roque said MinebeaMitsumi Inc.’s expansion involves ₱25 billion in investments and is expected to create 3,000 local jobs.

The expansion will cover semiconductor back-end manufacturing, battery protection modules for data centers, and Optical Image Stabilization technologies used in smartphone cameras. Cebu Mitsumi’s semiconductor operations are also set to increase analog semiconductor production capacity beginning in 2027.

Roque also said Japanese agri-tech firm E-SupportLink Ltd. expressed interest in expanding in the Philippines through drones, AI-assisted image analysis, and digital monitoring systems to help banana producers detect plant diseases earlier and improve plantation productivity.
