President Bongbong Marcos publicly addressed Senator Sherwin Gatchalian by his title of Senate President Pro Tempore during the country’s 128th Independence Day celebration, formally recognizing him among the senior government officials present at the ceremony in Rizal Park.
During his acknowledgment of officials attending the event, Marcos referred to Gatchalian as “Senate President Pro Tempore Win Gatchalian” before proceeding with the rest of his greetings. The recognition came during one of the government’s highest-profile national commemorations and marked a public acknowledgment of Gatchalian’s current Senate title.
“House Speaker Faustino “Bojie” Dy III and the honorable members of the House of Representatives; Senate President Pro Tempore Sherwin Gatchalian,” Marcos said.
Marcos and Gatchalian also exchanged a handshake during the Independence Day flag-raising ceremony attended by officials from the executive and legislative branches.
The President’s remarks came days after Malacañang reiterated its position regarding Senate leadership. During a recent press briefing, Palace Press Officer Claire Castro said the administration recognizes Gatchalian as the current Senate leader and dismissed concerns that the situation constitutes a constitutional crisis.
“In the eyes of Malacañang, in the eyes of the Executive, we have nothing that can be called a constitutional crisis,” Castro said.
“It is clear that the leadership we support and recognize is the leadership of Acting Senate President Sherwin Gatchalian,” she added.
As discussions over Senate leadership continue, the issue remains one of the most debated and divisive topics in Philippine politics today. With the chamber’s top post remaining part of the ongoing public discussion, the question of Senate leadership remains a source of uncertainty for many Filipinos at a time when major national issues demand legislative action.
